Triple Base Creative presents group show “Wild Combinations”

November 4-19, 2023

Canopy Projects, 916 Springdale Road #101, Austin, TX

The featured artists are well-established local Austin artists who have previously been commissioned by Triple Base Creative (TBC) for Facebook’s historic Artist in Residence program. These artists are all innovators working with mixed media in new and interesting ways. TBC’s curator Dina Pugh selected them to create installations in Facebook’s offices to spark creativity, and now in this public presentation, hopes to inspire new ways of thinking about one’s environment, presentation of artwork and use/re-use of unexpected materials. Artists include:

Virginia Fleck makes sensory objects and environments from reclaimed materials inhabited with notions of luck, chance, and magical thinking. Fleck’s artworks have a baroque upcycled aesthetic that transcends the utility of the materials. A centerpiece of the show–sparkling chains of can tabs become an oversized chandelier that generates soothing moiré patterns.

Michael Wayne Hall’s abstract paintings are grounded in the flat-color aesthetics of vintage screenprinting. Color gradients imply motion, shadows, and depth, suggesting transitions like the shifting of light or the passing of time. His hand-painted works are always created without the use of tape or masking, which allows imperfections to remain and reveal the process.

Ender Martos creates impactful sensory experiences of optical movement that engage the viewer's curiosity and perception. His colorful three-dimensional installations have been celebrated all over the world. Martos identifies as a new representative of the Venezuelan kinetic art movement started by masters Jesus Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez and Gego.

Aaron Michalovic’s meticulously hand-crafted wooden mosaics reflect his deep love for the colors seen in the natural world. He collects reclaimed materials from Austin’s many construction sites and experiments with rich paints and patterns to make these kaleidoscopic relief sculptures.

Suzanne Wyss presents Dank Honey–a meandering beehive inspired by a once flourishing hive found in the Austin greenbelt. This painted aluminum sculptural installation explores the possibilities of our curiously changing environment.
